Cocktail of the Week: American Studies

Trick Dog, the iconic San Francisco cocktail bar recently introduced its 15th cocktail menu, “Trick Dog University” (TDU). An homage to the classic college catalog, the menu is a nod to the recently founded Bon Vivants Scholarship. Proceeds from the sale of the actual menu, which runs until July, will go to the scholarship to provide support to five local students (one added each year) whose families work in the hospitality industry.

TDU drinks are named for “Fields of Study,” from Linguistics to Art History, and “Extra Curricular” activities, such as Clubs, Greek System, Student Government (low-proof cocktails), Athletics (non-alcoholic cocktails) and Post Graduate (private barrel selections).

In honor of their new menu, we chose its American Studies cocktail.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 oz Maker’s Mark
  • 1/2 oz Martini & Rossi Bianco Vermouth
  • 3/8 oz Corn Nut Orgeat (a mix of corn nuts and sweetcorn blended in water to make “corn milk”, we then sweeten with sugar, 1:1, and cut it with molasses and malt vinegar)
  • 6 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters
  • 2 dashes of citric acid solution
Instructions:
Stir all ingredients with ice and double strain. Serve on crushed ice and garnish with 3 epazote leaves and housemade brown butter crumble.
