Cocktail of the Week: Dead Rabbit Irish Coffee

Dead-Rabbit-Irish-Coffee

Next Monday (January 25) is National Irish Coffee Day! To celebrate, this week’s cocktail is the Irish Coffee from the legendary cocktail bar, Dead Rabbit.

According to sources, Irish Coffee first came about in 1942 when a plane flying to New York from the small village of Foynes, Ireland, home to the only airport that connected flights from Europe to New York at the time, had to turn back due to poor weather conditions. Irish chef Joe Sheridan was then asked to prepare hot food and drinks for the stranded passengers. Apparently, he thought that coffee and whiskey would be the best way to keep tired guests awake while keeping their minds at ease.

“Our signature cocktail drink at The Dead Rabbit is our Irish coffee – It took us a long time to get it right and I genuinely think the one we’re doing now with Bushmills Original is the best,” says Dead Rabbit Owner Sean Muldoon. “Bushmills Original has the highest grain content of the blends, which makes the whole Irish coffee lighter. Irish coffee shouldn’t be heavy or overbearing. Even our staff is commenting on how good it is.”

The bar makes it so well that not only are they sharing their recipe, you can also buy a kit (see below) from their digital store to make yours at home!

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Bushmills Original Irish Whiskey
  • ¾ oz Rich Demerara Syrup
  • 3 ¼ oz Sumatra Coffee
